What Jesus Came to Do (Mark 8:27-38)

The whole year we have been asking this question: “Who is Jesus?” And that’s because this is Mark’s question in his gospel. Is Jesus a prophet? Is he a good and wise man? Or he is something else entirely? Peter finally gets it right. Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus is a power and truth unlike any other come to save.

But then a dramatic shift. Jesus tells them that as the Messiah, he has come to do something very specific. In other words, it is not enough to know who Jesus is. One must also know why he came to the earth. And what he will tell the disciples will shock them and reveal something so important about them. And us. Jesus came to die. He had to. Do you believe this?
